Visiting the library

Sixth grade students are scheduled for Library Skills class for 20 weeks (2 marking periods). The curriculum includes an overview of each library section, use of the online catalog and databases, using online information and search engines, evaluating web resources and literature appreciation. Grades from this course are pass/fail and included on the report card.

Seventh and eighth grade students participate in library orientation in September and then visit the library at the discretion of their subject area teachers or on an individual basis. Many students come to the library during their Literacy period as well.

The library is open from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students may use the library before homeroom, during scheduled classes, during study halls (pass required), after school (sign up required) or when sent by a teacher (pass required).

Checking out books

Sixth grade students may check out four items and seventh and eighth grade students may check out five items. The loan period is for three weeks (renewals are permitted). Lost and/or damaged items must be paid for or replaced. Overdue fines are not charged.

Inter-library loans

Inter-library loan services are available in case the middle school library does not carry a particular book. Students may request specific titles from other schools within the Orange-Ulster BOCES School Library System. Students may also request that holds be placed on wanted titles.
