Stipends are available for classes on weather-related issues

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County is excited to share news of a generous grant from Orange & Rockland Utilities, Inc. to offer seven $1,000 stipends to selected residents of Middletown and Port Jervis.

This program is intended for individuals who have a passion for, interest in, or knowledge of weather-related issues—and who are eager to learn how they can take a leadership role in helping their community address weather and climate challenges.

The stipend will be provided to those who are selected and who complete the 2 hour each, 12 module training sessions (10 virtual, 2 in person) beginning in July 2025 and ending in October 2025.

Please see the flyer below for more information.

While the training provides a $1,000 stipend to those residing in Middletown, NY and Port Jervis, NY, consideration will be given to a student, past student or community member who would be interested in the training for experience or volunteer service.

This program trains local residents to plan and implement volunteer projects related to extreme weather event preparedness and weather adaption. The program also helps create community leaders who are able to bring knowledge about weather– related problems facing communities flooding, heat islands, and other adverse weather events. The community leadership stipend is for people who live or work in either Middletown, NY or Port Jervis, NY. Stipends are made possible by a grant from Orange & Rockland Utilities inc.

The program consists of 12 modules which will be held on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 10, 17, 24, 31, August 14, 21, 28, September 4, 11, 18, 25, and October 3. All modules will be recorded. First and last modules are in-person, all others are virtual. Virtual sessions will be recorded for those unable to attend. Verified completion of all modules is a requirement for full stipend compensation.

A stipend of $1,000 will be provided in two installments. The first payment for the stipend will be made after completion of the first module, and the second payment will be made after the completion of the entire course.
