Goshen’s track and field program finished up their season at the New York State Championship Track Meet at Middletown High School on June 13 and 14. The Gladiators competed in a number of events, finishing with new personal records and building on the success they’ve had this season. Joy Sawyer competed in seven races over two days at the New York State Track & Field Championship. When it was all said and done, Sawyer earned five medals and two state championships!

On Friday, Joy Sawyer ran in the preliminary rounds of the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, coasting to victory in both races to qualify for the Class B finals on Saturday. Sawyer ran 12.25 in the 100m and 24.70 in the 200m. Olivia Sawyer competed in the 100-meter dash as well, running 12.74.
The next day, Joy Sawyer resumed her spectacular sprint in the Class B final of the 100m dash. Sawyer ran 12.24 for her first gold medal of the day. Later, she ran in the 100m Federation final, finishing in 12.27 for fourth place overall. Sawyer holds the school record in the 100m dash after running 12.12 at the Section IX Class B Championship earlier this season.
Next, it was the 200-meter dash Class B final, where Sawyer once again finished first, running 24.72. Later, in the Federation final, Sawyer ran 25.07 for sixth place overall. Sawyer’s school record in the 200m of 24.61 was set at the Section IX Class B Championships held on May 29, which remains the third fastest 200m time in Section IX history.

The Sawyer sisters were joined by fellow sophomores Daniella Grant and Larianna Bala for the 4×100-meter relay. The Gladiators ran a blazing 48.43, lowering their school record to earn silver medals and a trip to the podium!

Junior Laila Logan was competing in the pentathlon. In the 100-meter hurdles, Logan ran a season’s best 16.97 for 600 points.
Later, Logan threw the shot put for a personal best 23 feet, 4 inches earning another 342 points, which was followed by her most impressive result of the day. In the high jump, Logan achieved a personal record of 5 feet, 3 inches for an additional 736 points. Logan jumped 14 feet, 1 1⁄4 inches in the long jump for 379 points. In the final event, Laila ran an impressive 2:24.79 in the 800-meter for another 760 points. Logan’s total of 2817 points earned her a trip to the podium, finishing 4th in Class B and 17th overall.

Sophomore Jackson St. Lawrence competed in the 3200-meter run, finishing in 9:43.31 for 11th place in Class B. St. Lawrence waged an impressive comeback after a long recovery following an injury towards the end of the winter track season.
Junior Isabel Barnhorst capped off an outstanding season with a school record performance in the 2000-meter steeplechase, running 7:19.95 for 17th place overall and 7th in Class B.


Senior Noah Klugman, who had qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase, was ill and unable to compete at States, but his opportunity to compete was not over. Less than a week later, he traveled to Eugene, Oregon for Nike Outdoor Nationals to compete in the 2000-meter steeplechase, running 6:33.27 for 40th place overall.
Senior Jeangardy Louis competed in the final field event of the day for the Gladiators, having qualified for States in triple jump. Earlier in the season, Louis jumped 46 feet, 1¼ inches, which is less than 2 inches off the school record held by Nasim Siddiq in 2006. At the State meet, Louis put together some quality jumps, with his best jump in the preliminary round coming in at 44 feet, 3 1⁄2 inches to qualify for the finals. He saved his best jump for last, jumping 45 feet, 3½ inches for 2nd place in Class B.
