Goshen alum aims to inspire students with painted mural

Katie, a Goshen High School graduate from the Class of 2025, recently created a mural at Goshen Intermediate School in what she claims feels like a full-circle moment.

Katie is a freelance artist and muralist based in Goshen who pours her creativity, love for color, and passion for storytelling into every project she takes on. For this mural, she drew inspiration from the school’s different “flocks” as well as the unique logos designed by students themselves.

The school’s flocks carry the themes of forgiveness, compassion, courage, and gratitude, and reflect the values students are encouraged to practice every day. Katie’s goal was for the mural to feel interactive, playful, and meaningful; each flock has its own representative logo hidden within in order to invite students to search, explore, and discover.

“Working at Goshen Intermediate School for an entire week was a nostalgic and joyful experience,” Katie said. She reunited with former teachers, connected with faculty and staff, and spent time chatting with students about how murals are planned, sketched, and brought to life. Throughout the project, she loved hearing the students’ excitement as they peeked in on her progress, asked questions, and shared their thoughts about art. She hopes the bright, energetic colors and whimsical style uplift and inspire every child who passes by.

These interactions reaffirmed her passion for creating art in educational spaces. She hopes to continue filling schools with vibrant, meaningful murals in order to help spark curiosity, encourage future artists, and help build environments where students feel excited, welcomed, and inspired.
