Food Service employee wins bench for school through recycling challenge

A group of people gather around a gray bench with lush plants and a building in the background.
Carol Fernandez and her colleagues at Goshen High School food services are the first to sit on the donated bench.

Carol Fernandez, a food services employee at Goshen High School, secured a new park bench for the school grounds by participating in a plastic recycling challenger earlier this year.

The challenge was hosted by STERIS Applied Sterilization Technologies in Chester. Fernandez, whose daughter works at STERIS, was the largest contributor to the challenge, collecting and recycling more than 500 pounds of soft plastic from the school cafeteria in less than six months.

On May 3, representatives from STERIS visited Goshen High School to donate the bench, made of recycled materials, in appreciation of Carol’s efforts.
