Check out the new mural on the wall in Goshen High School!

Katie Palau stands in front of the mural she created on the wall in Goshen High School and smiles. The horse she painted is behind her.

Every graduating senior leaves behind a legacy when they move on from Goshen. For Katie Palau, her legacy won’t be difficult to find.

This fall, Katie will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design with a major in illustration and a minor in advertising with art direction. To help her prepare for her upcoming program, she approached the main office with an idea. “I was thinking of it as more of a senior project to show for college,” Katie said. “It’s something that I can put in my application as a work in progress.”

After the administration and Katie decided on a spot for the mural, it was time to get to work.

“I didn’t look for inspiration that much,” Katie said. Instead, she chose a few subjects that she wanted to include in the mural, and went from there.

“I definitely took the horse off of Goshen racing track,” she said. “I really like horses.” Katie also looked to nature as a subject for her mural. “I put some flowers that are seen in New York,” she added.

When it was time to start painting, the process was one she already had familiarity with. Katie’s experience with digital art allowed her to take a measurement of the wall and convert it into pixels on her iPad, giving her a place to practice. “Digital is really good for planning big things because you can take a picture and draw directly over it,” Katie said.

Katie has worked on some large canvases, but this is the first time Katie has done something like this mural. “I’ve never done anything on a wall, especially with the texture that this has,” she said. “It kind of made me faster to do things on large scale, less perfectionist.”

Incredible job, Katie! We are thrilled to have your work on our wall for students to see for years to come!
