Goshen Voters Head to the Polls on May 19

On April 22, the Goshen Central School District Board of Education adopted a proposed $101,050,451 budget for the 2026-27 school year. It will be presented to voters for approval on May 19.

It represents a spending increase of $4,225,486, or 4.36%. The district has kept the proposed tax levy increase within New York State’s tax “cap” with a maximum allowable increase of 3.06% (approximately $1.7 million).

To help balance the budget, the district will reduce staffing through attrition, meaning some positions will not be filled following retirements. This includes two elementary teachers and two teacher aides at Scotchtown Avenue Elementary, and one teaching assistant at C.J. Hooker Middle School. A Teacher on Special Assignment will also return to the classroom, reducing one high school social studies position.

The district will discontinue its communications contract with Capital Region BOCES and reduce spending on equipment, supplies, and certain contractual services. The district will also consolidate four high school course sections due to lower enrollment. These changes are not expected to affect student programming or class sizes.

Residents will also vote to purchase six school buses at a cost of $751,285 and elect two members to the Board of Education. The candidates are John Sullivan and Roy Reese.

Additional details will be provided in the budget newsletter, which will be mailed to the community during the first week of May.
