Goshen joins Orange County bus safety program

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus visited the Goshen bus garage to see the installation of camera technology that is being used in a school bus stop-arm photo enforcement program. Goshen was added to the program during a recent expansion that included two other districts in Orange County.

State law requires motorists to stop at least 20 feet from a bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop-arm is deployed. In collaboration with the company BusPatrol, the County Executive’s program will capture vehicles on camera that violate this law by passing a stopped school bus. Motorists that illegally pass stopped school buses with red lights flashing and stop-arms extended may experience a fine with a minimum civil penalty of $250. These civil penalties do not impact driver’s license points or insurance rates.

Eight people stand next to a bus with their arms crossed and smile. They are all dressed nicely for the photo.
