New York intends to lift mask mandate beginning June 7

Dear Goshen Schools family,

On Friday, June 4, New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Howard Zucker issued a letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stating that New York will no longer require students and employees to wear masks inside school buildings starting Monday, June 7. This will apply to those vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Dr. Zucker cited the inconsistency in the CDC guidance between unvaccinated children at summer camps – who are “strongly encouraged” but not required to wear a mask – and unvaccinated children in schools who are required to wear a mask. You can view Dr. Zucker’s letter to the CDC here.

At this time, New York intends to allow districts to waive the mask mandate unless the CDC advises of contrary data or science. We fully intend to follow Dr. Zucker’s guidance to waive the mask mandate beginning Monday; those students and employees who choose to wear a mask may continue to do so. District officials will continue to monitor this information as it unfolds and will update the community as more definitive information is released.
