Letter: Interscholastic sports delayed until November 30

Good afternoon, Gladiator Nation,

Earlier today, the Section 9 Athletic Council approved a proposal to delay the start of interscholastic sports until November 30, 2020, for all of its member schools. Today’s decision means winter sports will begin on November 30. Fall sports will then begin on or around March 1, followed by the start of spring sports on or about May 1, with exact start dates still to be determined.

This decision was made with the safety and participation of all in mind. A November 30 start date offers the preservation of all three sport seasons, provides equal opportunity to all student-athletes, and minimizes any potential overlap between competitive seasons.

As a result, winter athletics registration will open for varsity and junior varsity programs on October 30. Registration for winter modified athletic programs will open one week later on November 6. Registrations can be made online through the FamilyID platform.

Additionally, the district will evaluate the possibility of students participating in on-campus workouts under NYS and CDC guidelines in the near future. More information about this will follow in the days to come.

While it has been a challenge for all of us amid the uncertainty of reopening athletics, I am grateful that we now have a clear understanding of what is to come, and for the fact that all of our athletes will soon be out there competing in the sport(s) they love.

Go, Gladiators!
