During the July 7 Board of Education meeting, Nancy Mesic was appointed as assistant principal of Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School and Goshen Intermediate School.
Mesic served as interim assistant principal, a split position between the two elementary schools, since mid-January. Previously, Henry Freedman served in the same capacity as elementary coordinator, but left the position to become principal of Scotchtown Avenue. The elementary coordinator title was then changed to assistant principal to better reflect the duties of the position, and Mesic became interim.
Since January, Mesic has worked with both Freedman and Goshen Intermediate School Principal Matthew Wentworth to help the two schools align their curriculum, manage staff development, and implement data driven instruction. She also developed and oversaw remote learning opportunities for students while schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s critical to ensure connectivity and continuation in learning among our younger students as they transition from one building to the next,” she said. “I enjoy working collaboratively and am excited to continue working with faculty and staff to create a well-rounded and successful learning program for our students.”
Before taking over the assistant principal position, Mesic was a math teacher at C. J. Hooker Middle School, and has been with the district for more than 18 years. She always knew she’d eventually like to transition from teaching to administration – especially in Goshen, where her children graduated. “I love teaching but was ready to serve Goshen families in a different capacity,” she said. “I look forward to this new chapter and all the opportunities and challenges it may bring.”
Mesic received a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Natural Science with a concentration in Mathematics from SUNY Potsdam, master’s degree in Elementary Education from SUNY New Paltz, certificate of Educational Leadership from Niagara University and master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Long Island University.
