The Goshen girls basketball team hosted Minisink in its home gym for the first round of the section playoffs. With many talented teams in the bracket this year, the girls worked hard for their third seed placement and were more determined than ever to put their efforts on display in front of a home crowd. Having already beaten Minisink in two close contests earlier this season, Goshen was prepared for a third battle to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Erin Smith led the team with 23 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Behind her was a freshman, Madison Clark, who also had a phenomenal game. Clark rounded up 15 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. The team is fortunate enough to have a group where everyone can score and play tenacious defense.
From the opening tip, the game was nail-biting. Goshen went on a spree immediately followed by Minisink’s own run. This back and forth action lasted throughout the duration of the first half.
At half time, the Gladiators found themselves leading only by one point, and they knew they had to come out stronger and with more intensity. Man-to-man defense is the team’s calling card. Discussing the game with a senior captain, Grace Clark, later on, she confirmed that their defense is their biggest strength.
Clark said, “I feel like we had to put in a lot of work this season to make our defense hard to beat. With our energy, I think we have the ability to rattle the other team while we stay calm.”
Not only with their resilient defense, but also with their hearts, determination, and chemistry, the Gladiators defeated Minisink, 56-46 and will be traveling to Saugerties on Wednesday, February 27 to challenge last year’s Section Champs in the semi-finals.
