Ada Lara, a Goshen High School senior, wants to put a smile on the faces of local children in need this holiday season.
Ada is collecting toys and gift cards for Safe Homes of Orange County as part of her civic action project for her Participation in Government Class, taught by Social Studies Teacher Jonathan Redeker. Titled “Love Shouldn’t Hurt,” the purpose behind Ada’s civic action project is to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence.
In October, Ada worked with Indigo Beauty Lounge in Chester to sell purple hair extensions (the color purple is associated with ending domestic violence), which raised $1,000 for Safe Homes of Orange County. She also held a bake sale at the high school, personally baking tres leches cakes and purple-frosted cupcakes, and raised $296 for the Mujtabah “Mush” Lodhi Scholarship Fund, in honor of a former Goshen student who was the victim of domestic violence in 2013. The fund was started by his best friend and classmate Matthew Gomes.
The toy and gift card drive will be held from Dec. 1-21. Donations may be left in a designated box at the front desk of Goshen High School, or ordered and sent directly to:
Apt. 1006 Woodhills Drive
Goshen, NY 10924
