View a letter from Scotchtown Avenue’s new school nurse

Dear Scotchtown Avenue families and friends,

My name is Dorothy McKenna and I am writing to introduce myself as the new school nurse at SAS. Many of you already know me from having worked in our school for a number of years as both the greeter and as a substitute school nurse.

A few things about myself: I am married and have two children in the Goshen School District – a girl, age 12, and a boy, age 10 – so I am right there beside you when it comes to concerns for our children’s health in school. I absolutely love being a school nurse and especially working with our K-2 students here at SAS. I approach my nursing practice with the attitude of “what would I do if this were my child?” and I want to assure you that your children’s health and safety is my top priority.

As far as my nursing background and education: I am a registered nurse with a bachelor of science degree in Nursing from Dominican College and a bachelor of arts degree in English Literature from Siena College. I began my nursing career at Westchester Medical Center and have since held positions in Medical Surgical Nursing, Oncology, Dialysis, and Pediatrics, and for the last four years, have substituted in many grade levels as school nurse here in the Goshen Central School District.

I would like to let all of you know that I will be in my office on the following dates should you want to drop off medications, discuss any concerns or just say hello and introduce yourself.

  • August 22: 12-2 p.m. (during the SAS Walk-Through)
  • August 25: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • August 28-30: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Please feel free to email me at if you would like to set up a meeting for any of those days.

I am looking forward to a great school year.

Dorothy McKenna, R.N.
