Physical Education Teacher Kathryn Magid and the Goshen Intermediate School were recently honored by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) as an Amazing Top Ten School for Hoops for Heart.

Over the past 10 years, the Goshen Intermediate School (GIS) has raised approximately $100,000 for the American Heart Association through its Hoops for Heart events. GIS is currently ranked second in the state for its fundraising efforts.

Hoops for Heart is held during the physical education department’s basketball unit each January. Magid, who has taught physical education at GIS for 11 years, has served as the event coordinator for the past 10 years. She hosts a kick-off event after winter break with posters, assemblies and prizes for students. Students learn about heart health and the importance of fitness and regular exercise, as well as the benefit of helping others.

“Hoops for Heart is a fun way to educate students about heart health, but it’s really about giving students an opportunity to help others,” said Magid.
