This week’s Goshen Gladiator Student Athletes of the Week are Varsity girls soccer star MacKenzie Kurek and football players Angel Soto and Matt Wierzbicki.
Senior Mackenzie Kurek is a team captain on the girls soccer team and has helped to lead the team to a 6-1 record thus far. On the season, she has scored 11 goals and registered 8 assists in 7 games. She has been a member of the varsity soccer team since her freshman year and she has been an integral part of the past three Division III and Section IX championship teams.
Mackenzie is also a member of the two-time defending Division Championship girls lacrosse team. Furthermore, she is a member of the World Champion Odyssey of the Mind team, and is completing a senior internship this semester. She recently committed to Pace University and will continue her academic and athletic career as a member of their women’s soccer team.
The Gladiator football team picked up a huge homecoming victory this past weekend, 27-13 over Monticello, that improves their record to 2-2. Senior quarterback Matt Wierzbicki had a great game, throwing for a touchdown, running for a touchdown, and catching an interception. Matt has rushed for over 400 yards and 3 TDs and has thrown for over 200 yards with 5 TDs on the season. He is looking to continue his football career at the collegiate level next year.
First year player, Senior Angel Soto, electrified the homecoming crowd with a 75 yard punt return. He has over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season and also plays very solid at cornerback, recording one interception.
Angel was also a member of our 2016 Division Champion basketball team. He is very excited for the upcoming season. Angel is still weighing his college options, but is excited to continue his athletic career at the college level.
