This week’s Gladiator student-athletes of the week are Boys’ Cross Country team members Liam Higgins, Louis Greco and Joe Medina.
The boys’ team began the season on September 7 with a win against Burke Catholic and Monticello. Juniors Joe Medina, Louis Greco and Liam Higgins swept the competition, finishing together in 18:45. In the three meets that followed, the trio of Higgins, Greco and Medina continued to lead the Gladiators, proving themselves as strong competitors.
This is Joe Medina’s second year running cross country. Last year, Joe was consistently in the top 7 for the duration of the cross country season, and experienced great success during indoor and outdoor track. After a summer of solid training, Medina has begun this season as a consistent number three runner for the varsity squad. At Warwick’s Wave Mania Invitational on September 10, Medina set a new personal record, finishing the 3-mile race in 17:38. Medina followed that performance by running 17:17 in the Suffern Invitational held at Bear Mountain.
In his third year of running on the varsity cross country team, Louis Greco has demonstrated that hard work and dedication pay off. Last year, Greco finished second at the Class B Section meet, attended the state meet for cross country, and was crowned the Class B Section champion for the 1600 meter run in outdoor track. This year, Greco picked up where he left off, finishing 6th at Wave Mania, running 16:48. The following week, Greco set a new personal record, running 16:33 at the Suffern Invitational.
Liam Higgins was a lifelong soccer player until last year. After making the difficult decision to hang up his soccer cleats for cross country spikes, Higgins found his true calling as a distance runner. As a sophomore, Higgins finished 7th in the Class B Sections cross country meet, attended the state meet, had an outstanding indoor track season, and won two individual section titles in both the 3000m steeplechase and the 3200m run. To begin this season, Higgins finished in second place at Wave Mania, shattering his previous year’s time by more than 45 seconds, running 16:18. The following week at Bear Mountain, Higgins ran the best race of his running career thus far, completing the 3-mile race in 16:07 and winning the Varsity C race. When all 3 varsity races are merged, Higgins posted the 3rd fastest time of the day, out of almost 400 varsity runners.
These three athletes, along with senior captain Kevin Long and sophomore Nicolas Paneto, have helped the Gladiator cross country team earn its best start in more than a decade! At Wave Mania, the Goshen boys placed 2nd in their heat. At the Suffern Invitational, the varsity squad again finished in 2nd place to a team who last year won the Connecticut State Championship. When all teams are merged, Goshen finished in 5th place out of 64 scoring teams.
