This week’s Gladiator student-athletes of the week are Girls Cross Country Captains Olivia Elston, Morgan Serkes, and Tessa Schaumburg.
The Lady Gladiators kicked off their racing season in the high heat on September 7 with a win at home against Monticello and Burke Catholic. Senior trio Olivia Elston (19:49), Morgan Serkes (21:11) and Tessa Schaumburg (22:04) took first, third and fourth places respectively. On Saturday, the Lady Glads traveled to Warwick Valley to race at Wave Mania, once again they were led by the Senior Trio.
Elston continues to impress in her second season of cross country. Last year, Elston came to Wave Mania brand new to the sport and placed 19th with a time of 20:42. This year, with a year of training and dedication under her belt, Elston blew the field away. Much to the delight of an ecstatic crowd, she raced her way to victory with a time of 18:36, the fastest time of the day by 17 seconds, the fastest time in her race by 45 seconds, and perhaps the most impressive of all; a course personal record by 1:47!
Olivia is being recruited to continue her running career by numerous Division I colleges and universities.
Senior captain Morgan Serkes continues to demonstrate dedication and leadership. Over the summer, Serkes took on the responsibility of arranging several captain’s practices per week, and it is clear that she put in plenty of training herself as she is looking strong this season. Serkes placed 4th overall at Wave Mania with a course personal record of 20:29.
Senior Tessa Schaumburg also personifies dedication as she leads by example daily. Schaumburg ran 22:03, a course personal record by 30 seconds! Both Serkes and Schaumburg are in their 4th year of cross country.
Morgan has the goal of continuing her running career at the collegiate level. Tessa wants to pursue art in college.
All three seniors are also members of the Indoor and Outdoor Track teams. Schaumburg is one of the top race walkers in Section 9. Serkes and Elston were both members of the 4×800 relay that ran at Nationals.
