Scotchtown Avenue students
celebrate National Library Week
This year, the
Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School librarians
selected the theme of “Driven to Read” for the
school wide celebration of National Library Week.
Racing flags and numerous posters of race cars
decorated the walls of the library in order to
excite students about the library, books and
reading.
The students designed their own bookmark around the
racing and reading theme and discussed libraries,
reading and books and the importance of celebrating
library week during their library classes. |

Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School
celebrates 50 years!
 |
|
Memorabilia from the 1950s contributed to
the night's nostalgia. |
On April 7, the
Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School celebrated its
50th Anniversary by hosting an Open House that was
open to the entire community.
Members of
Scotchtown's faculty and staff, both past and
present, as well as several community members
gathered to share memories, tour the building and
listen to music from the 50s, which was provided by
the members of the Goshen Youth Jazz Band.
A good time was had by all! We are looking forward
to the next fifty years! |

Author/illustrator Dave Ross. |
On April 9,
author/illustrator Dave Ross visited SAS students in
honor of National Library Week. Ross has published
more than 35 picture books and two of his books,
Space Monster and Mr. Terwilligar's Secret,
were on the International Association of Reading
and Children's Book Council 1982 Children's Choice
List.
Ross shared his
book, Space Monsters, and gave a
lesson on brainstorming the Who, What, When,
Where, How and Why of a story. He included
concepts for the beginning, middle and end of the
story as well as humor, suspense and the power of
imagination.
Ross ended his
presentation by showing some of his books in various
stages of publication preparations and by taking
questions from the students. For more information on

Dismissal, absences and pickups...it's
time to review!
Dear Parents and
Guardians,
From time to time, we need to review safety
procedures and practices while in school. The
following points are regarding dismissal, absences
and pickups:
- Please
remember that the instructional day does not end
until approximately 3:20 p.m. Please refrain
from picking up your child between 3-3:20 p.m.
This is an exceptionally critical time of the
school day. When your child is picked up early,
he/she is missing instructional time, class
meetings and directions for homework. When a
child leaves the classroom, two other children
must escort them to the nurse’s office and they
also miss instructional time. We are looking for
your assistance with this issue.
