KINDERGARTEN:
 
  • Activities to develop fine and gross motor coordination.
  • Exploration of the fundamentals of music through a variety of experiences that include singing, listening, movement and playing rhythm instruments.
  • Curriculum integration to reinforce classroom learning (i.e. letters, numbers, rhyming, colors, direction, seasons and holidays - including patriotic music).
  • Introduction to music literature; fostering recognition and appreciation.

FIRST GRADE:
 
  • Singing - use of Curven-Kodaly solfege and experimentation with a variety of ways to use the singing voice (i.e. dynamics, expression).
  • Notation - becoming familiar with the staff, clef signs, notes, rests and time signatures.
  • Composers - an introduction to the music of some of the most famous composers from different time periods and styles.
  • Recorders - an initial exposure to this instrument with emphasis on tactile coordination, technique, note reading and tone quality.
  • Listening - examples of music literature that demonstrate concepts being studied and describe music in terms related to the basic elements of music.

SECOND GRADE:
 
  • Singing - concentration on vocal technique, note reading and expressive interpretation.
  • The Orchestra - an introduction to the four families of instruments and how they make their sounds.
  • Listening - examples of music literature that demonstrate concepts being studied and describe music in terms related to the basic elements of music.
  • The Recorder - continued mastery of this instrument using a varied repertoire of music with the expectation that each child will play on pitch, in rhythm, with appropriate dynamics and timbre.
  • The Star-Spangled Banner - understanding the relationship between music and history while learning our national anthem.
