Read the May letter from Principal Mary Ann Knight

(Back)

The beautiful days of May are perfect to provide opportunities for healthy physical exercise for our students. Of course ,vigorous physical activity is underway in our P.E. classes every day under the direction of our teachers, Mr. Rodriquez and Mrs. Magid. On the playground at recess, our Walker’s Club members have already walked hundreds of miles that are being logged by our PTO volunteers. In our school store, the most popular items this year have been the clip-on pedometers!

At the end of April, a new walkway between the GIS building and Murray Avenue was installed by the school district and the village of Goshen with the financial backing of a state grant to provide safe walking to and from school for a number of students who live in our neighborhood.

During May, we will participate in a New York State walking initiative called “Healthy Steps”. The goal of this program matches our many initiatives to encourage physical activity for our students. The “Healthy Steps” days are marked on your monthly calendar. Parents are especially invited to come to school and to walk with the students during our recess “Walker’s Club” on those days. Our recess times are: Grade 5 – 12:15-12:45pm; Grade 4 – 12:50-1:20pm; Grade 3 – 1:25-1:55pm.

In addition, you’ll be receiving an optional family walking log to record walking progress and get everyone involved. We’ll tally and report the miles walked by GIS students and their families during the month of May

I’m proud that GIS is one of New York’s schools that is taking the lead in promoting healthy activity for all students.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann Knight, principal
