Principal Mary Ann Knight's
March letter!

Dear Parents,
Community Service is an important theme at GIS all
year long. For example, our Grade 3 students take
short field trips to visit Goshen senior citizens
several times a year. They sing and read for the
senior citizens, and often they bring hand made
gifts and play card games or board games with their
senior friends.
Our students also share their musical talents with
the community at many performances throughout the
year. You’ve probably enjoyed some toe-tapping music
by our students at the mall or in the park downtown.
Younger students at Scotchtown Avenue School always
enjoy chorus and instrumental concerts by the GIS
students.
Of course, the centerpiece of community service at
GIS is the vibrant Youth Ending Hunger Club. They
manage a wonderful food pantry located in a storage
room here at GIS. Throughout the year, the club
collects food to distribute to families in need.
During the recent winter holidays, they distributed
large boxes of food items to 40 families. On
Valentine’s Day, they gave gifts of health and bath
items to some more recipients.
Now the club is beginning their annual spring-time
collection to prepare gifts for the Easter/Passover
holiday season. Mrs. Sue-Anne Dropkin, the club
advisor, has announced a classroom competition for
the month of March. The class that brings in the
largest number of food items will have a celebration
at the end of the month.
As always, we appreciate your support of this
valuable community service that helps teach students
life-long lessons in generosity.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Knight, principal
