Students write letters to
Congressman about school nutrition
(Back)
January 27, 2010
- Students in Patricia Antisin's fifth grade
class recently wrote letters to a number of
legislators, including Congressman John Hall, after
reading an article in Time for Kids magazine
regarding school lunch nutrition. According to
Antisin, the students are concerned with school
lunch nutrition, especially since healthy eating is
part of the health curriculum at Goshen Intermediate
School.
The students
received a response from Representative Hall, who
thanked them for letters, stating that "it is vital
to the health of our nation for young people to get
involved in issues that are important to them." The
congressman went on to explain the Child Nutrition
Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act, a bill
that would help improve nutrition within schools.
The House of Representatives has not yet voted on
the bill, but Representative Hall said that "after
reading your letter, I decided to sign on as a
cosponsor of this bill."
"Young people do
have a say," said Antisin. "How empowering this
feels to my students!"
