GHS students
take historical tour at
West Point
 |
| The
view at West Point. |
On April 18,
students in Paul Bennis' U. S. History and
Government and Military History classes at Goshen
High School took a historical tour of the United
States Military Academy and the Military Museum at
West Point.
West Point is the oldest U. S. military base still
in operation. The United States Military Academy was
started in 1802 under the presidency of Thomas
Jefferson. West Point became an important post
during the Revolutionary War and was commanded by
Benedict Arnold when he was discovered betraying its
fortifications to the British Army.

GHS students
walk the line with
“drunk goggles”
 |
|
A GHS
student attempts to walk the line wearing
"drunk goggles." |
On May 7, Goshen
High School students in Shannan Magnetico’s Health
class learned about the impairments and dangers
caused by alcohol while wearing Fatal Vision
Goggles, also referred to as “drunk goggles.”
By wearing the goggles, students were able to view
the effects of impairment, including reduced
alertness, slowed reaction time, confusion, visual
distortion, alteration of depth and distance
perception, reduction of peripheral vision, double
vision and lack of muscular coordination.
The goggles were provided by Officer Anthony Pitt
from the Village of Goshen Police Department.
Officer Pitt taped a line along the floor and asked
students to walk the line while wearing the goggles.
He also played “catch” with students using a tennis
ball.

GHS students
learn
the consequences of drunk
driving
 |
| Chris
DeVitt, left, talks to GHS students about
his drunk driving accident that killed his
friend. |
Wearing a Yankees
baseball cap and looking like your average young
20-something, Christopher DeVitt stood before a
roomful of Goshen High School students and explained
how one bad decision ended his friend’s life.
On January 21, 2006, DeVitt killed his friend, Bryan
Steinard, in a high-speed drunk driving accident. At
around 2 a.m., DeVitt, then 19, wrapped the
passenger side of his sports car around a telephone
pole on South Montgomery Street in Walden, crushing
Bryan. The two had been drinking underage at a local
bar. At the time of the accident, DeVitt’s blood
alcohol content was 0.15 percent.

Goshen
students get spooked
by
local author and ghost investigator
 |
| Linda
Zimmermann |
On April 15, Goshen
High School students were paid a visit by Linda
Zimmerman, author of the Ghost Investigator
series, which chronicles her own experiences as
a ghost investigator. Her visit was one of the many
events in honor of National Library Week.
Zimmerman, a resident of Blooming Grove, became
interested in ghost investigations while working as
a historical lecturer. She began by simply
interviewing people about their haunting
experiences; however, her scientific curiosity, most
likely a result of her experiences as a research
chemist, led Zimmerman to begin conducting her own
investigations.
"My goal is to
obtain specific scientific research that you can
match up with the history of the haunted place,"
Zimmermann said.
