On April 18,
students in Paul Bennis' U. S. History and
Government and Military History classes at Goshen
High School took a historical tour of the United
States Military Academy and the Military Museum at
West Point.
West Point is the oldest U. S. military base still
in operation. The United States Military Academy was
started in 1802 under the presidency of Thomas
Jefferson. West Point became an important post
during the Revolutionary War and was commanded by
Benedict Arnold when he was discovered betraying its
fortifications to the British Army.
Former cadets have gone on to be Five-Star Generals
and Presidents of the United States. Currently,
there are two Goshen graduates attending the
academy.
Students enjoyed a guided tour of the academy and a
self-guided tour of the museum. Some of the favorite
parts of the academy tour included the architecture
of the academy chapel, the captured canons at trophy
point and the information about the daily life of
West Point cadets. At the museum, some of the most
popular displays were the personal pistols of George
Washington and Adolph Hitler, the weapon's display
and the miniature model displays of past conflicts.
