Goshen
High School teacher
wins Educator of Excellence Award (Back)
Jessica Weir, a
special education teacher at the Goshen High School,
was recently selected to receive the New York State
English Council Educator of Excellence Award. Only
12 awards were given to teachers throughout the
state.
Weir was nominated by English Teacher Antoinette
Gazzaniga, who unbeknownst to Weir, put together a
portfolio of her work and collected letters of
recommendation from Superintendent Roy Reese as well
as Weir’s students.
“Having observed
Jess in the classroom, I find her to be a master
teacher – reaching students of all academic ability
and managing to move them to be able to grasp
knowledge and to use it well,” said Gazzaniga. “She
understands her students and pushes them to reach
their maximum. In addition, the kids love her and
find her nurturing and caring; the conditions under
which they work the best.”
Thirteen years ago, Weir began her teaching career
in Goshen after working for the New York State
Senate. Over the years, she has worked in all four
of the district’s schools, but finds that she enjoys
teaching at the high school level best.
“At this age, students have unique personalities,
humor and character – they’re basically adults,” she
said. “I am able to form relationships with my
students and interacting with them on a day-to-day
basis is a pleasure.”
Weir also interacts with students on the playing
field. During her career, she has coached both track
and girls modified soccer at Goshen.
On November 15, Weir and Gazzaniga attended an
Awards Tea at the Marriott Marquis at Times Square
in Manhattan where she and other recipients were
honored for their accomplishment.
“I have always taught my lessons knowing that each
of my students has a unique way of learning,” said
Weir. “It was exciting to receive an award given to
educators who understand that students’ voices need
to be heard.”
