Janice
Marsiglio named
OCAFCSE Teacher of the Year
December 2008(Back)
Janice Marsiglio,
Family & Consumer Science (FACS) Teacher at Goshen
High School, was recently selected as the Orange
County Association of Family and Consumer Science
Educators (OCAFCSE) Teacher of the Year.
Six years ago, Marsiglio began teaching in Goshen
and since then, has transformed the department from
a single teacher into a full FACS department. She
and her colleague, Mary Jo Budd, host numerous guest
speakers for their students in order to complement
the FACS curriculum.
Before coming to
Goshen full time, Marsiglio was a substitute teacher
in the district while she raised her two children,
Lauren and Frank Jr. She previously taught for 11
years in New Jersey and also spent two years working
as an account executive for a communications company
in the food and nutrition industry.
“I always felt that teaching was a part of my life,”
she said. “The greatest reward in being a FACS
teacher is a student’s smile as he or she gains
knowledge and skills for life.”
Marsiglio enjoys being involved with students and
children and spent two years as the JV basketball
cheerleading coach. She is co-advisor of the Class
of 2012 and serves as a Cub Scout leader and Little
League Girls Softball Coach. She has helped organize
fundraisers such as Hoops for Hannah, and serves on
the Goshen 911 Commemoration Committee, among other
things.
Marsiglio was nominated for the award by her
colleagues, Fran Callan of Monroe-Woodbury Middle
School, and Pat Fontanta of Washingtonville Middle
School, whom she knows through OCAFCSE.
“Family and Consumer Science is one small family
niche of educators, and it’s an honor to share this
award with my colleagues,” she said.
Marsiglio was honored at a special reception at the
Olde Erie Pub and Grille in Middletown on December
4.
