Jack George, Class of '87

Jack George knew he wanted a career in radio when he was only eight years old. After graduating from Goshen High School in 1987, George attended SUNY Orange and began interning at WKLJ in Poughkeepsie, a radio station that today is popularly known as WRRV.

On November 5, George paid a visit to his alma mater to share his experiences to students in Cathy Frahme’s Poetry and Song Lyrics class and Janice Marsiglio's Work Study class.

In January, George will have been with WRRV for 19 years, eight of those years as a full-time employee. His career is eclectic; besides working as a radio deejay – you’ve heard him under the alias “Jack the Ripper” – he currently works as a master control operator at Time Warner Cable 6 and also has experience as a camera man and sports anchor.

While talking to students, George played a video he put together that explored the inside of the WRRV studio. The video toured the inside of his deejay booth as well as different studios and production rooms. He also explained the deejay “board” and its computer program.

George’s passion for radio was evident when talking to students about music – he loves everything from Prince to The Who to Boston – and couldn’t help but laugh when many of the young students hadn’t heard of some of the bands he mentioned.

“For me, the music created in the 70s, during an era that had so much controversy and so much significance, that’s the kind of music to appreciate because it had value – these songs meant something to a lot of people,” said George. “Hopefully when you’re my age, you’ll have appreciated music in that kind of way.”

Please note: As part of her professional development project for this year, GHS English Teacher Cathy Frahme is working to establish a pool of alumni and community members who are willing to come visit as guest speakers in classes across the curriculum. Any alumni with unique, interesting or inspirational career experiences should contact Cathy Frahme at cfrahme@gcsny.org.
