Outdoor track & field teams complete successful season

(Back)

June 22, 2010 - The Goshen outdoor track & field teams made good uses of the newly renovated facility this spring. Despite the departure of several key student-athletes, both teams were able to navigate through a difficult schedule and finish with identical records of five wins and two losses.

The girls team was led by a core of returning student-athletes including seniors Shanice Saunders, Meghan Olin, Jenny Edmonson, Caroline Bjorkman and Lauren Oettinger; juniors Brittany Foote, Lucy Hinchliffe, Katelyn Scott, Ericka Norton, Melissa Jordan, Kristina Davila, Esther Laaninen and Tina Wildrick; and sophomores Alina Burger and Jamie Lisack. The addition of a strong core of freshmen was also integral to success of the team and has strengthened the core of girls program.

Brittany Foote was able to repeat as champion of Section IX in the 400m dash with a school record 58.4 seconds. She also added sprinting to her resume this season with blistering times in the 100m and 200m dashes.

The boys team returned some core leaders including seniors Dylan Simonson, Anthony Cuomo, Matt Buono, Sean Birdsall, Marc Beliveau, James Schnikter and Brian Ruiz; juniors Steve Van Doran, Jordan McWatt, Jeff Florkowski, Joe Stark, James Lappe and Brandon Reuter; and sophomores Chris Maroni and Billy Stahlmann. The team had several key freshmen and newcomers who contributed to its success. John Augustin was displaced by the earthquake in Haiti and played a large role in shaping our middle distance events. Michael Grasso was also an important member of the team in spring as well as throwing events.

The boys team will continue a tradition that goes back to the 1990s. The team has sent a student-athlete to compete at the intercollegiate level every year for the past 12 years and that tradition will continue next year as Matthew Buono will compete for Wilkes College in the fall.
