Studio in Art
"A"
Semester - 1/2
credit
This is a basic
foundation course recommended by the New York State
Board of Regents to fulfill the graduation
requirement. Students are exposed to a wide variety
of studio experiences in drawing, painting, design
and three-dimensional work. Students also become
familiar with art history through slides, prints and
visits to museums to provide a basis for art
criticism and aesthetics.
*Studio In Art “A” is a prerequisite for Studio in
Art “B”
Studio in Art "B"
Semester - 1/2
credit
This course can be taken as a
continuation of Studio in Art “A” or as a
stand-alone course. This is a basic foundation
course recommended by the New York State Board of
Regents to fulfill the graduation requirement.

Drawing and
Painting
Semester - 1/2
credit
This is an advanced
art course designed to develop strong skills and
proper techniques in the art of drawing and
painting. Students work in a variety of media:
pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink, watercolor, acrylics
and oil.
*Drawing and Painting is a prerequisite for Advanced
Drawing and Painting
Advanced Drawing
and Painting
Semester - 1/2
credit
(Prerequisite: Drawing
and Painting & teacher recommendation + portfolio)
This is an advanced
art course for talented students who have excelled
in a full year course of drawing and painting. It
provides students the opportunity to build a strong
background in the drawing and painting media of
their choice.
Ceramics I
Semester - 1/2
credit
This course deals with
all aspects of a very versatile medium, ranging from
hand building methods to ceramic sculpture and work
on the potter’s wheel. Working techniques,
decoration methods, glazing and proper firing are
included, as well as emphasis on the ceramics and
the physical aspects of clay.
*Ceramics I is a prerequisite for Ceramics II
Ceramics II
Semester - 1/2
credit
This course explores
surface enrichment of clayware. Students are
encouraged to creatively design hand built projects
and to develop an individual style by using all of
the techniques learned in Ceramics I.
Sculpture I/II
Semester - 1/2
credit
This advanced art
course is designed to offer aesthetic and technical
experience so that students can express themselves
in both resistant (plaster, wire, etc.) as well as
plastic (clay, paper mache, etc.) materials.
Projects made in class will be assigned according to
students’ interests and abilities.
*Sculpture I is a prerequisite for Sculpture II
Creative Crafts
I
Semester - 1/2
credit
In this course,
students have the opportunity to work with the
following media: cardboard and paper sculpture;
linoleum printing; paper mache; mobiles; string art;
slip casting; batik; mosaic and textiles.
*Creative Crafts I is a prerequisite for Creative
Crafts II
Creative Crafts
II
Semester - 1/2
credit
In this course,
students have the opportunity to research and to
specialize in one or more crafts that are explored
in the Creative Crafts I class.
Independent
Study
1 or 2 Semester - 1
or 1/2 credit
Students completing a
sequence of art courses may apply to do an
independent study in the medium of their choice. A
course of study must be chosen that has been
approved by the State Department of Visual Arts
Education and be conducted under the guidance of an
art teacher.
*Special approval is needed from the Department
Head, Guidance Counselor and
Principal.
