Tips for Success in Spanish Class
1. Learn the Vocabulary.
You
will receive a vocabulary list for each unit. Review
these words as soon as you receive the list. The
faster you learn the vocabulary. the more confidence you
will have in class and the more you will be able to
participate in class activities.

2. Do your homework.
Every
night you will have homework that will help you practice the
unit vocabulary or skills. Do your own homework.
Write down questions that you want to ask at the beginning
of class.

3. Get extra help.
As
soon as you are having difficulties, make an appointment to
stay during the extra help period at the end of the school
day. You may also improve your Spanish after school or
during your study period. Flashcards or studying with a
friend can also be helpful study tools.

4.
Use your Spanish.
Take
advantage of opportunities to use your Spanish outside of
the classroom. Communicate with classmates in Spanish.
Listen to Spanish television or radio stations. Look
for Spanish in the supermarket or department store.
Speak Spanish with visiting exchange students or native
speakers in the community. Get a Spanish speaking
pen-pal.

5. Participate in Class.
You
will gain confidence the more you speak in Spanish.
Your accent will improve and you can get feedback on your
accuracy. Class is more interesting and fun if you are
actively involved.

6. Study each day.
If
you want to retain your Spanish in your long term memory,
frequent short periods of practice will significantly
improve your listening and reading. Fifteen minutes of
intensive study each day is far more effective than two
hours of study the day before the exam.

7. Use all of your senses.
The
more senses you involve in your studying, the more
effectively you will learn. Write the words.
Make a study guide. Say the words out loud and listen
to yourself say the words. Draw and label pictures of
new vocabulary. Make a tape of yourself reading the
vocabulary and play it back while you look at the words.
