Orchestra Grading Policy
**Orchestra students will
receive a numeric grade out of 100. Students will be
graded on the following:
Lessons –
Students are required to attend 1 lesson per week.
Lessons are worth 10 points each. 5 points are
earned if the student attends the lesson, and 5 points
are earned if the student is prepared. Being prepared
means that the student practiced his/her assignment, and
has all of their lesson materials with them. (Having
materials in your locker does not count!) Lesson
materials include orchestra music, a pencil and the
lesson book.
Students will lose 2 points for not having practiced the
assigned materials, and 2 points for not having their
lesson materials with them. If a student is
exceptionally late (more thaN 20 minutes), or Mrs.
Calohan or another student has to go get the student
from his/her classroom, he/she will lose 1 point.
Students will have 2 “freebies” per marking period.
This means that 2 lessons can be missed without
penalty. Any missed lessons in excess of that will have
to be made up or the student will get a zero for each
missed lesson.
The lesson schedule is posted each week on
Mrs. Calohan’s website as well as on the bulletin board
outside of the orchestra rehearsal room.
**Private Lesson Waiver (High School
ONLY!) GHS orchestra students that REGULARLY take
private lessons on the instrument they play in orchestra
may be exempt from school lessons. See Mrs. Calohan for
details and paperwork.
Concert Write Ups
– Students will be asked to turn in 2 written
assignments during the year. (2nd and 4th
marking period) These are worth 10 points each.
Students must write about a live performance that they
attended as an audience member during the semester the
assignment is due. (DVD concerts and online performances
do not count!) Students will be graded on spelling,
grammar, and content.
Playing Tests
– Playing tests will be given each marking period. Each
playing test is worth 10 points. Students will
be asked to perform scales, book exercises, and
orchestra music during each playing test. Students will
be informed about the test materials and performance
expectations well in advance.
Mandatory Dress
Rehearsals – There are 2 mandatory after
school dress rehearsals during the year. Students

these rehearsals. Illness and family emergency are the

concert. In the event that a student misses a concert
and does not provide and acceptable excuse, he/she will
receive a 0 for their concert grade.
The student may do a make up assignment to earn half
credit for their concert grade. Concert grades are out
of 100. They are part of the 2nd and 4th
marking period grade averages.
High School Concert

student’s mid-term or final exam grade on
their report cards. (2nd and 4th

excuse for missing a concert will be required to
complete a make up assignment in order to receive credit
for the concert. Students who do not provide an

any points for this grade.

of extra credit each. Students may also turn in up to
2 extra concert write ups per making period for 2 points
each. This means that students may earn up to 8 points
