Cindy McGlynn of Wurtsboro, a teacher at Goshen High School, recently earned the teaching profession’s top certification by achieving National Board Certification (NBC), according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is one of nearly 7,300 teachers nationwide who earned NBC this year.

McGlynn teaches Earth Science and Oceanography at Goshen High School. She has been a teacher for 13 years and holds degrees in Earth Science, Biology, and Recreation. She has also served as a softball coach.

“Going through the process of National Board Certification has helped shape me into a better teacher,” said McGlynn. “By analyzing my own teaching, I’ve learned to present material in different ways, enabling me to address the needs of students who possess different levels of understanding.”

“NBC’s goal is to excite and engage participating teachers, and that excitement trickles to the students, making learning a more enjoyable experience,” said McGlynn.

National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. It is a voluntary process that is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes up to three years to complete, and measures what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. This process requires teachers to demonstrate how their activities, both inside and outside of the classroom, improve student achievement.

McGlynn is one of nine teachers in Orange County who have achieved National Board Certification, and is the only one in the Goshen Central School District.

“I couldn’t have achieved National Board Certification without the support of my colleagues and students,” said McGlynn. “Their encouragement and assistance were the inspiration I needed to get through the rigor of certification, and for that I am extremely grateful.”
