On February 24,
three Odyssey of the Mind teams from the Goshen
Central School District competed in the regional
competition at Orange-Ulster BOCES in Goshen.
Goshen High School Odyssey of the Mind team members
Rachel Jordan, Katie MacDonald, Alex Finkelstein,
Ryan Kish, Kiersten Ellefsen, Maddie Laskoski and
Sara Laskoski, along with their coach, Beth Laskoski,
placed second in the region with their creative
solution to the problem “The Wonderful Muses.” In
Greek Mythology, muses were the source of
inspiration for the creative works of artists and
scientists. In their problem, a muse must inspire a
real person and a team-created character in order to
make positive contributions to the world. They chose
Urania, the muse of astronomy and astrology, who
inspires Louis Braille and the Shooting Star through
the singing and dancing of her lively
constellations.
The Goshen
Intermediate School (GIS) sent two teams to the
competition. One team competed in “Odyssey Road
Rally” and was awarded third place for its solution.
Team members Rachel Andryshak, Alyssa Eilers, Daniel
Donovan, Austin Brock, Lauren Wapshare, Vishnu Rao-Sharma
and Advaita Rao-Sharma worked with coaches Karen
Brock and Moira Eilers to design and build a vehicle
that would compete in a road rally and perform three
sports-related tasks.
The other GIS team chose to compete in “The
Eccentrics,” where team members created three
characters who solve a problem with the Earth system
and are rewarded with a celebration. The team also
placed third. Team members are Hannah Blustein,
Gianna Gesualdo, Meghan Sager, Madison Blaine,
Sophie Weissman, Kathleen Stamos and Dianna Rumpf,
with Coach Cathy Kloorfain.
