Peter Brockmann, Director of Transportation at the Goshen Central School District, will co-chair a special committee dedicated to seatbelts, which was convened in September by President Pat Bailey of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT). 

The committee is charged with researching 3-point lap-shoulder belts in order to determine whether they are safer for children than the seatbelts currently found on school buses. 

Brockmann is co-chairing the committee with Dave Christopher, Director of Transportation at the Shenendehowa Central School District in Cliff Park. Twenty transportation directors from across the state, representing both school district and contractor operations, are assigned to the committee and are joined by resource partners from the Council of School Superintendents, School Boards Association, Association of School Business Officials, the State Education Department, the U. S. Department of Transportation, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute, the New York State PTA, and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Council.

The committee is currently researching the 3-point lap-shoulder seatbelts and is studying several related areas, including crash studies and accidents involving the 3-point shoulder-lap seat belt, and is also examining the current use of the seat belt nationwide. 

Brockmann and his committee plan to conclude this study by March 2006.
