Board of Education adopts 2006-07
budget proposal
During the April 10 Board
meeting, the members of the Board of Education adopted the budget proposal for
the 2006-07 school year.
The proposed budget for next year will be
$51,711,300, which represents a 6.1 percent spending increase over the current
years budget. This translates into an estimated 4.97 percent increase in the tax
levy.
Next year's budget is being driven by
obligatory costs, such as fuel, electricity and heat. It also calls for
additional teachers in order to compensate for growing student enrollment as
well as higher standards in education as set forth by the state.
Residents will also vote on a bus proposition,
which proposes the purchase of four full-size buses, one wheelchair van, and one
small bus at $530,516. The cost will have no tax impact until 2007-08 and will
be spread over five years.
This year's budget vote will be held from 6
a.m.-9 p.m. May 16 in the Board Room at the Main Street Building, 227 Main
Street. Stay tuned for more details!

Budget Development: It's quite a process
Back in
October, district administrators and
educators initiated the process to develop
the 2006-07 budget for the Goshen Central
School District.
Budget
development began with the reorganization of
the Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee, a
voluntary group comprised of Goshen
residents. Along with a few veteran
committee members are some new faces, all
eager to help develop the 2006-07 budget.
“The role of
the committee, although advisory, is to ask
hard questions about the budget process and
delve into the costs,” said Superintendent
Roy Reese. “The committee members bring a
citizen’s perspective to budget planning,
and play a major role in the process.”
