District mourning the loss of dear friend and educator Jane Unhjem

August 20, 2012 - The Goshen Central School District is mourning the loss of a devoted educator and friend. Jane Unhjem, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, passed away on Sunday, August 19 from injuries sustained from a plane crash in Long Island.

Jane’s husband, Erik, was also on the plane and is at the Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Center with critical injuries. Another passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear who was piloting the plane.

Jane was a vibrant educator and leader with an infectious energy that affected everyone around her. She took tremendous pride in her work and her warmth and enthusiasm for learning was evident each and every day she spent at Goshen Schools. During her time with the district, she touched the lives of countless students, parents and faculty members. The entire Goshen community is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend.

“Jane was deeply loved and respected within our district and community, not only as an educator but as a friend,” said Superintendent Daniel Connor. “She was a tremendous force in our district and the mark she has left will not soon fade. Words can’t express how sorely she will be missed.”

Jane is survived by her husband, Erik, her children, Gayle and Matthew, and her parents, Val and Ray Waleski. Services are unknown at this time.

Starting immediately, grief counselors from the district and Orange-Ulster BOCES are available at the Goshen High School for any staff members or students who are in need of support during this difficult time. The counselors will also be available from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. tomorrow, August 21.

District seeking monetary donations: The district has received several phone calls and visits from community members who are looking for ways to help the Unhjem family during their time of need. The district has been in contact with Jane and Erik’s children, Gayle and Matthew, and they are in need of monetary assistance to help with expenses while they are by their father’s side. If you would like to make a cash donation (cash only, please), visit Mary Ellen Nutley or Cindy Brown at the Main Street Building, 227 Main Street in Goshen.

Donate via PayPal: A family friend set up an account where people can make donations to the Unhjems using their PayPal accounts. There is also an address for people who would like to mail a donation in the form of a check. To make a donation, view the Unhjem Family Fundraiser page.
