Safety drills important in learning school bus safety
All students in the Goshen Central School District receive basic safety and emergency evacuation drills three times each year beginning in September. For students in grades 6-12, this is essentially an emergency evacuation drill. For grades K-5, it is a complete safety drill lesson including instruction in safe riding, safe crossing, seat belt use, respect,
and emergency evacuations. Classroom teachers join drivers in conducting the safety drills on board and outside the school bus.
Student awareness highlighted by fun, interactive safety programs
January is Goshen Central School District’s unofficial Bus Safety Month.
During the month, the district hosts several safety awareness events to stress school bus safety to its students.
“Buster’s Safety Quest,” starring Buster the Robot School Bus,
is held for students at Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School, Goshen Intermediate School and St.
John’s School. The interactive program featured Buster, Shrek and friends working together to learn the seven major school bus safety rules.
The National School Bus Safety Poster Contest
is held for students in grades K-8. Students will create a poster with
a pre-selected theme. Winners then compete at the regional level for a chance to win the New York competition and compete nationally.
A new program for fifth grade students, “Bus Safety Survivor Jeopardy,”
began during the 2004-05 school year at the Goshen Intermediate School. A representative from each fifth grade class competes in the game for a chance to win his or her class a pizza party.
The program was such a success that the Transportation
Department received an invitation from the
Executive Director of the New York
Association For Pupil Transportation (NYAPT)
to present the program at the NYAPT
Conference on July 11 in Albany.
Goshen also boasts a Bus of the Month program. Students who follow the driver’s instructions, abide by the safety rules, show respect for others and/or have shown improvement are nominated. Winners receive an award certificate and an ice cream coupon. A special magnet identifying them as Bus of the month will be placed on the side of the bus.
