Awards and Recognition
The teachers
and staff members of the Goshen Central School District
are a group of accomplished educators who are
focused on the success of their students. Because
of their commitment and dedication, they constantly push
themselves to become the finest in their field and
are consistently recognized for their
accomplishments.
Listed below are
a number of educators who have been recognized for
going above and beyond for the students of this
district.

Helt recognized by National Council Boys Scouts
of America
Donna Helt, senior
food service helper at Goshen Central School
District, was recently recognized and given an award
by the National Council Boy Scouts of America. The
award acknowledges noteworthy service of exceptional
character to scouting.
Helt serves as
Advisor of Venturing Crew 65 of Goshen and Council
Training Chair for the Hudson Valley Council. She
began her work with the Cub Scouts 12 years ago and
her sons, Ben and Chris, are both Eagle Scouts.

Goshen High School teacher wins Educator of
Excellence Award
Jessica Weir, a
special education teacher at the Goshen High School,
was recently selected to receive the New York State
English Council Educator of Excellence Award. Only
12 awards were given to teachers throughout the
state.
Weir was nominated by English Teacher Antoinette
Gazzaniga, who unbeknownst to Weir, put together a
portfolio of her work and collected letters of
recommendation from Superintendent Roy Reese as well
as Weir’s students.
“Having observed
Jess in the classroom, I find her to be a master
teacher – reaching students of all academic ability
and managing to move them to be able to grasp
knowledge and to use it well,” said Gazzaniga. “She
understands her students and pushes them to reach
their maximum. In addition, the kids love her and
find her nurturing and caring; the conditions under
which they work the best.”

Sheryl Lynch wins Outstanding Science Teacher
Award
Sheryl Lynch, a
kindergarten teacher at Scotchtown Avenue Elementary
School in Goshen, was recently named Outstanding
Science Teacher of the Southeastern Section of the
Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS-SE).
Lynch was nominated by her former colleague Midge
Monat, a Goshen Central School District retiree and
2001 award winner. Criteria suggests that a nominee
have at least five years teaching experience,
demonstrate exemplary science teaching, and
exemplify the professional teacher in attitude,
approach, diligence, dedication, and knowledge. A
nominee should also contribute to the school program
beyond the classroom and be involved in the
community and professional organizations.

Meredith Yatto wins Outstanding New Science
Teacher Award
Meredith Yatto, a
seventh grade Life Science teacher at the C. J.
Hooker Middle School in Goshen, was recently named
Outstanding New Science Teacher of the Southeastern
Section of the Science Teachers Association of New
York State (STANYS-SE).
Yatto was nominated by her colleague and mentor,
Patty Sherman, who is also the Chairperson for
STANYS-SE. Criteria suggests that a nominee have
only one or two years teaching experience,
demonstrate exemplary science teaching, and
exemplify the professional teacher in attitude,
approach, diligence, dedication, and knowledge. A
nominee should also contribute to the school program
beyond the classroom and be involved in the
community and professional organizations.

Janine Robinson named New Middle School Teacher of
the Year
Janine Robinson, a social studies teacher at
the C. J. Hooker Middle School in Goshen, is the recipient of the New Middle
School Teacher of the Year Award, which is awarded by the Mid-Hudson Council of
Social Studies.
Robinson received her bachelor degree from SUNY Albany and her graduate degree
from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. She was student-teacher at the middle
school, which led to her full-time position as a social studies teacher in 2003.
“I’m very surprised and flattered to have received the award,” said Robinson.
“Goshen is a great place to work.”

Kathleen Hoerup named Teacher of the Year
Kathleen M. Hoerup, a physical education teacher at the Goshen Intermediate School, was named this year’s recipient of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance
(NYPHERD) Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award. Only one elementary-level physical education teacher in the state of New York is awarded this honor each year.

Cindy McGlynn achieves National Board
Certification
Cindy McGlynn of Wurtsboro, a teacher at Goshen High School, recently earned the teaching profession’s top certification by achieving National Board Certification (NBC), according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is one of nearly 7,300 teachers nationwide who earned NBC this year.

Transportation Direction co-chairs NYAPT committee
Peter Brockmann,
Director of Transportation at the Goshen Central
School District, will co-chair a special committee
dedicated to seatbelts, which was convened in
September by President Pat Bailey of the New York
Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT).

Science teacher works with NASA engineers for summer JASON project
Cindy McGlynn, an
Earth Science and Oceanography teacher at the
Goshen High School, at the Goshen High School,
recently traveled to Arizona and California from
July 23-Aug. 1 to visit various premier
educational institutes and research facilities as
part of the Summer Teacher Institute with the
JASON Project, a leading provider of
experience-based science and math curricula and
professional development for grades 4-8.
