Ask the Superintendent - September 5, 2007
School is open! Music to the ears of this
superintendent. Administrators and support staff
have been busy preparing for the opening day of
school for most of the summer. Teachers have been
arranging their rooms, creating lessons and learning
activities for weeks in anticipation of this day.
Parents and students also have been preparing for
the “first day” of school. School supplies have been
purchased; changes in family schedules have been
made as students look at new starting and dismissal
times for each of our schools. Summer schedules have
been customized to prepare for another school year.
School bus drivers have practiced their runs and are
familiar with their new stops. The Buildings &
Grounds Department have prepared our buildings to
the point that they not only look great, but
actually sparkle and shine.
There is always a natural anxiety on the part of
students as they begin the new school year with a
new teacher. Kindergarteners will have the greatest
adjustment as they start school for the first time.
This, of course, is debatable if you attend the
opening of Scotchtown Avenue School, as I do each
year, and observe the parents of Kindergarteners.
Third, sixth, and ninth grade students must make
major adjustments as they move to different schools
with different times and procedures, but somehow all
that anxiety dissipates in a short period of time.
The opening of school is an exciting time. We
welcome everyone back and look forward to a
wonderful year.
