Ask the Superintendent - August 7, 2007
This summer has been extraordinarily busy in the
Goshen Central School District. The Scotchtown
Avenue School and Goshen Intermediate School
conducted very successful summer school programs for
grades K through 8. The Intermediate School and C.
J. Hooker Middle School were also busy hosting many
Goshen Joint Rec. programs. Goshen High School had a
full credit bearing summer school for our students
in grades 9 through 12. The Middle School also
hosted a Summer Music Institute, which was a music
camp, sponsored by the Orange County Music Educators
Association. Perhaps the highlight of the summer was
the Goshen Youth Jazz Band’s invitation and
subsequent performance at Bethel Woods on Saturday,
August 4th. I am always happy to see kids in our
buildings learning and involved in productive
activities during the summer months, and this has
certainly been that type of summer.
We have also been very busy with many other
endeavors. Our telephone/security project has been
moving along nicely. While our proposed completion
date was late August, like most construction
projects, we may not have it completely finished by
the opening of school; however, we are still
optimistic. Additionally, our Buildings & Grounds
Department has been busy restoring the press box and
storage area at the C.J. Hooker field. The drainage
project and resurfacing of the athletic field has
been started, which will eventually restore the
field to excellent playing condition. As a result of
this work, all football and soccer contests will be
played on the High School Campus this fall.
The month of August will be pressure-packed with our
maintenance and custodial staffs working on the
buildings so they will sparkle and shine for the
opening of school. On August 22nd two very important
events will occur. Our traditional Summer Graduation
will be held at the Main Street School at 11:00 a.m.
for students who have successfully completed their
high school requirements during July and August. At
6:00 p.m. that evening, Freshmen Orientation will be
held at the High School for the incoming 9th grade
students and their parents.
The summer has certainly passed quickly and school
will open in just a little more than three weeks. We
still have much to do before our students start
their new academic year.
