Ask the Superintendent - Aug. 30, 2006

Did you ever notice how August 31st sneaks up on you? Wasn’t mid-July, with more than six weeks of summer remaining, just yesterday? There was still plenty of time to enjoy the long summer days. Ample opportunities remained to do all that had been planned; be it recreation or summer work projects. Then in what appears to be an instant you look at a calendar and “Holy End of Summer Batman!” it’s August 31st. Once again another summer has flown by. Soon comments will be heard like; “I don’t know where the summer has gone!” and “each year summer seems to get shorter and shorter.”

Lengthwise summers really haven’t changed much over the years, but what has changed is the amount of “things and stuff” we try to cram into them. The end result is we always need three more weeks to accomplish our planned summer projects and in reality we usually only have three days left.

In the event you think your summer has been too short, the following illustrates individuals whose summer ended long before September 5th:

• High School football practice started August 14th for coaches and players;
• All other High School sports started August 21st;
• High School athletic competition started August 28th;
• The majority of our teachers have been preparing their classrooms for more than two weeks;
• New teacher orientation was held August 28th, 29th, and 30th, for the twenty-eight professionals new to our district;
• Members of the Board of Education visited all of the school buildings on the evening of August 29th to certify they are safe and ready to receive students on Opening Day, September 5th;
• On August 30th, 31st, and September 1st, our bus drivers will be driving their buses “rehearsing their routes”. (A sure sign summer is over, is seeing school buses on the road).
• School opens for teachers and staff on August 31st with a Superintendent’s Conference Day;
• September 1st is a full day of school for teachers, as they report to their respective buildings to work with their administrators;
• Most college students were back on campus for classes which started on August 28th; and lastly
• The first day of school for students in Pennsylvania was August 28th.

Yes it is August 31st, but time still remains to complete that last minute shopping and enjoy a long, relaxing weekend before the start of school on September 5th. Due to the Labor Day Weekend and the fact that I will be out in the schools with the “kids” all day on Tuesday, my column will not appear next week. Have a great Labor Day Weekend and enjoy the last official weekend of summer.
