Ask the Superintendent - August 29, 2007

In the last few weeks there has been some discussion in the community about the Goshen Central School District using the former Salesian School to ease the problem of increased student enrollment. I believe it is important to state that the use of the Salesian School was carefully investigated two years ago when it became apparent that our growth would require the district to expand its facilities. Honey Bernstein, the former Town of Goshen Supervisor and I, along with school and town officials, toured the site multiple times. We reviewed the engineering reports commissioned by the Town of Goshen and carefully considered potential uses of this facility. We even attempted to partner with Orange-Ulster BOCES in a collaborative effort to put this building to use. BOCES officials, upon the advice of their engineers, declined to partner with us because the cost to rehabilitate this old structure was prohibitive.

The use of this building was also seriously considered by the District’s Growth Task Force Committee and the pros and cons were thoroughly examined. Additional visits were made to make sure every possible question was answered and nothing was overlooked. Although on the surface Salesian appears to be a potential solution to the District’s increase in enrollment, after careful study there were far too many problems, costs, and limitations.

The last weekend of summer vacation is rapidly approaching. I hope it is happy, safe, and relaxing and everyone is ready to return to school on Wednesday, September 5th.
