Ask the Superintendent - Aug. 16, 2006
A look at the calendar will tell you it’s August
16th, and the summer vacation is rapidly coming to
an end. It seems as though High School Graduation
and The Great American Weekend were only a few short
weeks ago. As I gather my thoughts for this week’s
column, many individuals from the Class of 2006 are
anxiously preparing to leave Goshen for their first
college experience. Now, when I visit each building,
I see the custodians and maintenance workers
feverishly “fighting the clock” to meet a deadline
that is approaching all too quickly. Entering each
building, I am met with the common greeting; “it
won’t be long before the kids are here!!!”
Summer school has ended, the New York State Regents
Exams for Summer Session have been administered and
next week on Wednesday, August 23rd, our Summer
School Graduation and Freshmen Orientation will take
place. These events, held on the same day, are
always symbolic to me. One group of students, who
have worked exceptionally hard to overcome
adversity, will be leaving the High School, and six
hours later members of the Class of 2010 will have
their first formal introduction, some with
intrepidation, to the High School.
It would be easy to speculate, as the years pass the
summers are getting shorter. I would like to suggest
the real explanation is, we are all becoming busier.
There are only so many activities that can be
crammed into a summer’s day or week before days
begin to blend together. When a few of these busy
weeks are coupled together, the end result is an
impression of a shortened summer.
We in the Goshen Central School District are
certainly a perfect example of this phenomena as we
fill each summer day to overflowing. Our
construction and maintenance projects have been
particularly ambitious this summer. After a lengthy
and thorough interview schedule, we have
successfully hired all of our teachers and have only
a few teacher aide positions yet to fill. New
teacher orientation, with its comprehensive
curriculum, is scheduled for August 28, 29, and 30.
Opening Day, which is our first Superintendent’s
Conference Day for faculty and staff, is August
31st. All teachers will report to their buildings
for meetings with their administrators on September
1st. This is our last summer workday and opportunity
to prepare before all the “kids” return on Tuesday,
September 5th.
When school reopens we will have the largest overall
enrollment in the history of our District. Currently
that number is 2,930 students and growing. Each day
our Registrar is enrolling new students.
As we continue to experience new enrollment, we have
delayed slightly our traditional mailings to parents
informing them of room and teacher assignments. This
has been done in an attempt to prevent having to
rearrange classes once school has started. I ask
that you be patient because your notification will
arrive shortly.
