Ask the Superintendent - Jan. 10, 2007
It is January 10th, and hard to believe that we
are at the mid-point of the 2007/08 Budget
Development process for our school district. In
October 2006, the building principals, Directors of
PPS and Transportation, and the Superintendent of
Buildings & Grounds were in the initial stages of
their budget process. These administrators and their
respective staffs worked to formulate and review
their goals as they developed next year’s budget.
During November and early December all of the
administrators revised their budgets in an attempt
to pare costs before submitting them to the Central
Office. In December and the first week of January,
the Central Office Administrators met with each of
them to further revise and reduce spending and still
enable their prioritized goals to be met.
The “behind the scenes” work on next year’s proposed
budget has been completed. On Tuesday, January 16,
the first of many public presentations will be made
to the Board of Education. At this meeting, the four
building principals will present their proposed
budgets and personnel requests. All of the other
administrators and departments will make similar
presentations at future meetings. During all of
these sessions, the Board of Education will question
and review what has been presented and then work
with Central Office Administrators to finalize the
budget. The 2007/08 budget is scheduled to be
adopted at a special meeting on April 16th and
presented to the community for their approval at the
Annual Budget Vote and School Board Election on May
15th.
For the past two years, we have had the good fortune
to have a Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee work
with school officials reviewing all of the
documentation presented by school administrators.
Their assistance has been exceptionally helpful in
the budget preparation process and we once again
look forward to working with many concerned
citizens. The Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee
will meet weekly starting the first Thursday in
February at 7:00 p.m. and will continue each week
through April. For those who volunteer it is an
extensive time commitment, but I believe a rewarding
one. Involving the community, as a resource, in the
budget development process has proven to be a very
valuable for the District.
